Pool Camp Cabins update

Pool Camp and Cabins 5 & 7
Our pool camp cabins continue to see progress as we inch our way closer to the summer! Both Cabins have been dried in and framework is in place. Now that this is complete, our staff can begin putting up drywall, plumbing, and lighting, and these will start resembling our other cabins again.

You can see in the pictures the framing, the stalls that will eventually be made into showers, as well as the new thresholds from inside each side of the cabin. It is also of note that these cabins will have ramps, and will be wheelchair accessible.

One very cool thing we’ve found in doing these renovations was a news publication, The Crusader, for the Methodist youth of Alabama from 1963! It’s interesting to think about what Alabamians were wrestling with at this time and to think about Sumatanga and the role it played for our youth back then. To see the full publication, check out our social media!

Sumatanga Summer Camps

It’s that time of the year again to start signing up for our summer camps! Our camps are starting to fill up so make sure to get your registration in! This year, our theme is Peace Works. We will look at what it means to live in peace together with our neighbors and practice the love that God shows us.

We’re happy to welcome back an old favorite this year in our Taste of Camp which is for rising 3rd and 4th graders. This 3-day-2-night camp is a great introduction to overnight camps for our younger crowd. We have our entire summer camp catalogue linked here: Summer Camp Dates & Descriptions. 2025 is going to be a special year for our summer camps!

Sumatanga Summer Camps

We are now opening our Counselor in Training (CIT) applications! This is a great opportunity for 16-17 year olds who are interested in working alongside our counselors to minister to our younger campers. CITs can volunteer for a week of camp where we have programming built in specifically for them to talk through and learn from their experiences helping lead small groups throughout the week. To apply, click HERE!

Lastly, we are currently still hiring staff for this summer! If you’re interested in lifeguarding, belaying, working with kids, or working in the kitchen, fill out the application linked HERE! Working on staff at Sumatanga is sure to be a fulfilling and life-changing experience! Check out this fun video that gives you a view into what being on staff is like!

Stewardship

We’ve recently gotten the unfortunate news that there is a Pine Beetle infestation on the southwestern tip of our property. As a result, we will be doing some forest management and cutting down a good portion of trees. This will be mostly seen in the coming months as you enter Sumatanga going northeast on Sumatanga Road. These beetles can cause a lot of damage if not dealt with properly and so we’re doing our best to curb this issue.
